East bank trail at Lake Hallstatt
The east bank trail from Steeg to Obertraun along Lake Hallstatt is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Salzkammergut. The easy adventure hike is espacially popular for families, as it offers some special highlights in addition to wonderful views.
The east bank trail from Steeg to Obertraun
The approx. 3-hour adventure trail is accessible from both Steeg and Obertraun. We start at the train station in Steeg. From here you walk along the street to the Metzgerwirt Vieh Heli. Past the restaurant, we follow the hiking trail below the Arikogel to Untersee. Here you can decide whether you want to go to the bathing ground or cross the village towards the Lake Hallstatt.
The hiking trail now leads between lake and train along meadows and loose forests until you reach the “Uferwirt Seeraunzn” after about 1 hour. It is worth taking a break here and enjoying the regional dishes.
After the inn, the path is divided into a cycle and hiking path, at the same time the botanical nature trail begins here (along the way you can get to know many native plants). We follow the path along the lake and enjoy the glacial ice-dominated seascape with an impressive mountain view. After approx. 45 minutes we reach the suspension bridge - the deepest point of the lake with a depth of approx. 125 m.
Then we reach the Hallstatt train station - the highest point of the hike at 520 m. There are two options here: follow the path to Obertraun or take a ferry to the World Heritage town Hallstatt.
We follow the path to the end point of the hike, to Obertraun, and reach the village near the bathing ground 5 minutes away from the train station. From here you can return by train or go back the same way. In summer you can take the ship back to Steeg. There is also the possibility to continue hiking to Hallstatt.
The path of many possibilities
The fifth largest lake in the Salzkammergut invites you to swim and linger in summer. In addition to the bathing grounds in Untersee and Obertraun, there are always freely accessible bathing stations and benches to relax along the east bank trail.
The boat trip on Lake Hallstatt is also highly recommended. Either from the train station in Hallstatt to the World Heritage town of Hallstatt or from Obertraun to Hallstatt or Steeg / Untersee.
A special highlight along the east bank trail is the “Goiserer Lindwurm” carved from an old maple tree by the chain saw artist Rudolf Schinnerl - the symbolic animal of Bad Goisern's history. The “Goiserer Lindwurm stands outside the village of Untersee along the hiking trail and is one of the most photographed motifs on the trail.
